Local oral tradition.
Today, there are approximately 300-400 toll houses scattered across Scotland’s landscape. Many of these buildings and their history play a part in local culture and oral traditions.
One tradition concerns a toll house on the far flung coasts of north Scotland, by Tongue. Local legend has it that on certain nights, though always at the same late hour, residents staying at the toll house have seen the lights and heard the noise of a motorbike fast approaching. At the point where the motorbike and its rider ought to pass by the toll house, it mysteriously vanishes into the night and no motorbike is ever seen. The story is not unlike other car ghost stories such as the legend of the Sligachan ghost car on Skye.
